Research Summary

My research interests involve synthetic transition metal chemistry, with emphasis on designing novel ligands that force novel metal ion coordination structures. These structures may promote better solar energy conversion with improved metal-containing photosensitizers for solar cells. This research, a collaborative project with Professors Knapp and Potenza, involves the design and syntheses of improved metal-based dye sensitizers that will be evaluated in working solar cells by Professor Nate Lewis's group at Cal Tech. A second collaborative project with Professor Knapp seeks to develop improved therapies for controlling secondary spinal cord injury from oxidative neurodegeneration processes following spinal cord trauma. Prodrugs for this purpose are designed to achieve enhanced uptake to the central nervous system, and will be tested by Dr. Wise Young's group at the Keck Institute for Neuroscience using their rat model of spinal cord injury.
